Deep Tissue Massage Side Effects

Deep tissue massage (similar to Swedish massage) uses deeper pressure to ease recurring muscle tension and reach lower layers of muscle tissue. Its aim is to relax the muscles, and it often achieves this goal: sometimes, however, side effects might occur during or after treatment. If these symptoms happen and are causing discomfort, be sure to bring them up with your chiropractor so they can address them.

  • Sore/aching muscles: Muscle soreness on the treated area is a common side effect following a deep tissue massage. It is normal because the muscles worked with during a deep tissue massage may not have been touched or manipulated often, if ever. Soreness may feel in the days after like a good workout. It may feel mild or moderate and should fade over the days following treatment.
  • Pain: Pain may also occur during treatment: your muscles may not be used to deep manipulation. This should also subside as the massage continues: if it does not or is intense, let your chiropractor know and they can evaluate the treatment. If pain continues after the massage, it may be beneficial to put ice on the troubled areas to reduce inflammation and stay away from intense physical exertion.
  • Sleepiness: After the massage, you may feel tired or fatigued. This may be the case because of muscle relaxation or release of stress after the massage. This effect should not last longer than the day of treatment.
  • Headache: It is not uncommon for clients to experience headaches after a deep tissue massage. This may be due to awkward head positioning during the treatment. Try to rest your head or take a break from demanding activities if this occurs, and call your chiropractor if it lasts more than a few days after treatment.
  • Nausea: Because massage deals with and releases toxins from the body, sometimes nausea may occur after treatment. It is not unheard of for clients to feel as though they have an upset stomach in the hours and days after their massage. If this happens, try resting or drinking water to ease nauseation and avoid intense activities.

If soreness continues past a few days and worsens with time, contact your chiropractor. Also let your chiropractor know if symptoms of sleepiness, headache, or nausea do not fade over time.
